Trip to the Nepal

Photobucket Nepal, often called "Shangri-La", is one of the most unique countries on earth. Home to over 1200 species of birds, 800 types of flowering plants, and 600 varieties of butterflies, Nepal is an ancient, landlocked country nestled between India and China. Home of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, as well as the birthplace of Lord Buddha, it also boasts more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other nation. Nepal has a full range of climates, going from tropical in the Terai, moderate in the Kathmandu Valley and Middle Hills, to frigid cold atop some of the most spectualar glacial mountains in the world, where trekkers and climbers come to challenge their mental and physical endurance, often accompanied by Sherpa guides.

Photobucket In Nepal, Hinduism and Buddhism are equally practiced and respected. Though the country ranks as one of the poorest in the world, it is culturally blessed with a rich history and long-standing traditions. Festivals are a very important part of Nepali life, and there are actually more festivals than there are days in the year! All of them are celebrated with singing, dancing, and great merriment. The famous religious center for Hindus, Pashupatinath, and Buddhists, Swayambunath, are both located in the Kathmandu Valley. Almost every street and alleyway is home to some shrine, temple, or stupa, and it is virtually impossible to remain untouched by the deep spiritual nature of the country.

Photobucket Nepal has more than 36 distinct ethnic groups, and over 123 spoken languages and dialects, including the national language of Nepali. The local cuisine is based heavily on the staple foods of rice and dal (lentils), and includes everything from goat, chicken, and buffalo curries, to homemade yogurt, achars (pickled fruits or vegetables), and the famous Momocha, or steamed dumplings. Art is generally influenced by religion, and most craftsmen are Newars, a Buddhist ethnic group concentrated in Patan, a neighboring city of Kathmandu.

Photobucket THE IDEAL time to visit Nepal is the start of the dry
season, October and November, when the monsoon rains
have cleared the air and the cloudless sky allows incomparable
views of the Himalayas.

Photobucket There are many resources through which you can learn about Nepal, its culture, people, history, natural terrain, and religions. Books, magazines, newspapers, and dozens of online sites are available and can provide more information about this magnificent country.

  12. My dear Gabriela,
You have good reason is an extraordinarily beautiful image. You may already believe that I caught in my retina that image to the natural. It was a thrill I can not describe: The Himalayas (with its peak Everest) viewed from airplane and the beauty that results from the reflection of sunlight on the ice, only the sky or close to it!
    Kissy
